Sunday - September 16th

Today we were gently awakened by Lakota flute music.  Breakfast was at 8:00a and then we were off to take in the sights of the Rez.
The first stop was The Badlands National Park where we hiked over a mile on rocky barren terrain to an area called The Sanctuary.  There we reclined in silence reflecting on the history and people of the area.
Following our visit to the Rez was a stop at a popular place on Pine Ride called Sharps Corner (a convenience store with lots of snack options).  This was very well received by the 15 freshman from Elon University who are sharing the week with us.
Traveling on we visited the new site of Remember - Feather 2.  This is 160 acres near Porcupine and will give Remember a more centrally located presence on Pine Ridge.  Much work needs to be done to ready the land in order to build the needed facilities.
Our last stop of the day was the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.  We heard Dakota High Horse recount the events leading up to that horrific event.  Then it was back home for supper and our evening speaker.
Tomorrow we start our work.  Each of us is in a different work group which should make for a variety of experiences.
